Miyabi – Japanese Relaxation Massage

Massage Studio Review

This is the first in a series of reviews looking at studios that primarily offer massage services to clients. As they do not seek to offer a traditional day spa experience, we will not be rating them on the same criteria as day spas, but provide a guide to experience.

The (almost) secret massage studio. When I first came across Miyabi, it was by accident. Walking through the Paramount Centre shopping precinct, I came across the massage studio tucked away in a quiet space. After enjoying a quick look through, I decided that this was one studio I should return to and try out. I must admit, though, I’m not impressed by the Paramount Centre. It always seems like it’s not quite finished, and there’s always gaping holes in its design or suite of businesses. Today, it was the street front that was under refurbishment, following the move away of Mary Martin Books.

Finding my way through the meandering path to Miyabi, I was greeted warmly by Kaori, manager of Miyabi at the Paramount, and my therapist for the day. The reception is small, mostly just a counter to receive bookings and payment, and a few lounge chairs for reclining with refreshment before or after your session.
Escorting me to my room, which was really just a turn around, as the door was behind me, Kaori explained the treatment and undressing procedure. This can sound trite, but when you are taking your clothes off in a strange location, sometimes it helps to get an idea where to put your clothes, and stash your bag in case it’s in the way. It’s clear that Miyabi is strictly non-sexual. This is pointed out quite clearly in cute little signs around the studio, with neat writing and flower symbols. Must be a problem, obviously, and quite a shame, as Miyabi’s focus is providing professional relaxation, aromatic and deep tissue massage, and located within a shopping, business and residential district of the city, this makes them ideally placed to offer a wonderful experience on a regular basis.

Decor is suitably quiet, albeit in a range of colours across a broad spectrum. Rooms are really just partitions, so noise could be a problem on busy days, or with construction workers just outside, but they are decorated with nice touches of colour, sculptural artworks, and subtle lighting. The table was very comfortable, and the room suitably warm enough for a massage treatment.

Kaori was certainly a great therapist. She performed the relaxation massage with professional application, concentrating on the areas that I suggested, but providing a complete massage experience, working through a full body routine.
I was thoroughly relaxed by the end of the session, feeling the tension in my muscles had been drawn away. My shoulders and back, especially, were feeling very supple and relaxed.

Miyabi is a great place to get a regular treatment. It has a handy central location in the cbd, prices are very reasonable, and therapists are great. There is no bathroom in the therapy studio, so use is made of the facilities in the Paramount Centre, which, unfortunately, are pretty average.
A cup of tea or glass of water was awaiting me after my session, and I spent a few minutes enjoying a cup in the lounge area, before returning to the rest of my day. I’d definitely recommend Miyabi for those looking for a short or long session of massage to relieve the aches and pains of the day. Well worth a visit.

As Miyabi mostly concentrate on massage, it’s unfair to compare them with day spas, so the following is a guide to their services.

Rating: Above Average

Pros: Great relaxing treatment, friendly staff, warm ambiance.

Cons: Paramount facilities, a little noisy.
