All Steamed Up

Get ready to sweat.

Although there have been steam rooms in day spas for a while now, for those of you that like to get hot and steamy there is a developing trend to incorporate body treatments in the steam room itself.  Rather than a simply adding a sauna experience, the sophisticated treatments that spas are now offering are a great way to enhance the warm, cleansing properties of the steam room.

Aurora Spa RetreatMaking the most of their gorgeous facilities, Aurora Spa Retreat in St Kilda offers the Kitya Karnu SIgnature Treatment in their steam room. Translated from an aboriginal language to mean ‘salty stones’, this signature treatment combination will have you feeling invigorated, cleansed and refreshed. Opening with the Aurora ritual of aromatic inhalation of essential oils and a calming visualisation, clients are encouraged to thoroughly relax, balancing the body through a series of body treatments and stone rituals. The platter of delicious treatments include a full body aromatic oil and mineral salt exfoliation and an application of Wattleseed & Walnut Resurfacing Skin Cream. Next the therapist places cool river-stones along the energy meridiens of the body, and the treatment continues with a facial using Darphin Cleanser and Mask. Whilst waiting for the mask to do its work, your therapist will apply an Aurora Spa Rituals Hair Masque and move into a thoroughly relaxing scalp massage. FInally, a spritz of mist for hydration completes the treatment leaving you feeling fresh and revived. Some of the benefits include a boost to your circulation, removing dead skin cells, stimulating the skin, hydrating the scalp, hair and face.
(1hr $165. See Aurora Spa Retreat for bookings)

For a more exotic note in the steam room, look no further than the Opal Rasul Temple at Stephanie’s Spa Retreat in Brisbane. With its mosaic tiles on the walls and bench seating, domed ceiling with light ‘stars’ and swirling steam mists, this sanctuary takes you well away from the everyday. Covered in delicious coloured muds, singles, couples or even groups of 3 people can enjoy  soaking up the atmosphere, relaxing under the sparkling lights and gently wafting music. A truly multi-sensory experience, the Opal Rasul Temple concludes with a delicate rain mist falling from the ceiling and a cleansing shower. The combination of sweating and cleansing mud leaves you feeling thoroughly relaxed and revived.
(1hr 1 person = $159 per person, 2 people = $139 per person, 3 people = $119 per person. Contact Stephanie’s Spa Retreat for bookings. See Spa Review here)
