Basement Grooming Day Spa has closed

by Glenn Reynolds

It’s with regret that I note the closing of Basement Grooming in Collins St. It was one of the most enticing Day Spas that I’d found. Entering the chic urban ambience complete with leather couches and flat screen TVs with experienced staff focussing on giving guys the ultimate in spa experiences was an exciting moment. Alas, this has now passed. Another spa is about to emerge in their location, but with a completely different focus and feel. More on that later…

Zipt Day Spa chose a different route, opening their doors to women, presumably to survive and prosper.

Does this mean that not enough men value their skin? Can a men-only spa survive? What do you think?

I'm not sure a male only spa can survive, well not in Australia anyway. Maybe it if were in Japan I would say yes.

Men are becoming more health and spa saavy these days, but not enough for a business to soley focus to that target market. The evidence is apparent. What a shame, it's a great idea.

Hi Mother.

Thanks for your thoughts. Can you tell us a little more about the context in Japan?

I have read about the younger men adopting a different lifestyle to their elders, embracing a more sustainable work/life balance. Sounds like they also embrace a more fluid sense of fashion and look after their appearance. Is this true?
