Day Spa Review

The street presence of a sign is important for this spa, as the location is tucked away in a quiet Lower Ground floor of an office block on busy Collins St. I was calling on a whim and I was very pleased to secure an appointment within 30min of my call.

Previously the site of a Jurlique Day Spa, the owners of Island have changed the ambience markedly. The soft lighting, Pacific island theme, relaxation lounge and herbal tea encourages the right atmosphere.

I was ushered to the small male change room (Note: no shower) with a key to the locker provided. After changing into the Island robe and disposable g-string (necessary with body treatments or hydrotherapy), I waited a brief time before being ushered into the therapy room. My therapist offered a professional and soothing service, but could have talked me through the procedure a little more. The salt scrub was a great combination of scratchy cleanse and soothing finish. My skin felt enervated at the end, which was great, because I actually ordered the clay body wrap. Being a newcomer to body therapies, I was too scared to ask if this was the right treatment!

After 20min of washing by orchestrated showerheads (one in a ticklish spot) the therapist returned to rinse off any remaining product. (Note: disposable g-strings leave little to the imagination when wet!)

Another dry g-string later and after a brief pause to enable the therapist to fill the tub with fresh water, I was led into the Hydrotherapy room. The therapist attempted a massage using the pressure hose, but it was less than convincing. I was then left to float blissfully, massaged by the jets for 20min or so. The temperature of the water was set exactly, along with spa jet pressure, and it was over all too fast.

This was an extremely satisfying experience, and a very relaxing way to end the day.
